Recommended Rides

I won't attempt to duplicate the excellent "24 day routes in Berks, Bucks and Oxfordshire" by Nick Cotton.  If you don't have this book (and its companions) then you are missing out.  Its routes are excellent, even in areas well known to you.  Its routes are typically 25-30 miles and usually take in places of interest and refreshment.

Other routes around Abingdon

For those of you armed with TrackLogs software I have some useful routes saved.  I intend at some point to  convert these to map source format, but that is for the future.  To download right click the links and "Save Target As"

Circular Rides

Vale of White Horse (38 Miles)

Virtually flat route avoiding major roads taking in some excellent scenery.  Add a trip to the White Horse and Uffington Castle (1 mile from route) if you want a bit of uphill too.  A favourite Sunday morning ride.

Oxford, Eynsham & Stanton Harcourt (38 Miles)

Another virtually flat route.  Woodstock is 1 mile off the route and makes a pleasant stop.

One way routes

These end at Railway stations.  I catch the train back to Didcot or Radley.

To Streatley (60 Miles)

A good tour of Oxfordshire and West Berkshire.  Some ups and downs, but only a couple of major hills.

To Goring (19 Miles)

A very pleasant route.  A short detour to the Church at Little Wittenham and the Wagon and Horses at Wallingford are to be recommended.  Two major hills and a couple of minor ones.

Other Routes

Ideal for the longest evening of the year.  Start from the Greyhound at Tidmarsh around 5.00pm, you will easily have time for a drink at The Red Lion (Upper Basildon), The Bell (Aldworth), The Four Points, The Behive and The Ferry Boat Inn (Whitchurch) before dark.  For those with greater stamina the Cross Keys (Pangbourne), The Star (Pangbourne) and the Greyhound (Whitchurch) will only extend the route by half a mile.
